Physical Agility Test
Preparation
Your physical fitness is of critical importance for your safety and the safety of those you wish to protect. Running 2-5 miles a few times per week, while incorporating some sprint workouts, will begin to prepare you for the cardio expectations of the Academy. Body weight workouts alone will be sufficient for the physical aspects of the Academy; focus on pushups, sit-ups, pull-ups, squat thrusts, and mountain climbers.
Practice
The test has specific elements that will require you to have the ability to sprint, run long distances, and incorporate upper-body strength. Applicants who follow the aforementioned body weight exercises will be much more prepared for the exam. Those who wish to practice the obstacles (chain link fence and solid wall) on the PAT course at IPD may do so at their own risk.
Examination
On test day, you should arrive dressed appropriately for a workout, as you must complete the specific set of exercises given in the allotted time. The particulars include:
- Chain Link Fence Climb – scaling a 6-foot chain link fence followed by a 25-yard sprint
- Solid Wall Climb – scaling a 6-foot solid wall followed by a 25-yard sprint
- Body Drag – lift and drag a 165-pound life-like dummy 30 feet
- Pushups – maximum pushups in 2 min (knees cannot touch the ground)
- Sit-ups – maximum sit-ups in 2 min (shoulders cannot rest on the ground)
- 1.5 Mile Run
