Chief Michael Kent was sworn in as Chief of the Irvine Police Department in 2021. He has been with IPD since 2002 and is the first Irvine Police Chief to grow up in Irvine and rise through the ranks from police explorer to Chief. Assistant Chief Noelle Smiley serves as the second-in-command, overseeing various divisions within the department and ensuring operational efficiency. ​IPD’s Command Staff includes three Commanders and ten Lieutenants who oversee specific divisions and units:

  • Mark Anderson – Special Operations Division
  • James Hutchcraft – Patrol Operations Division
  • Dave Klug – Investigations Division
  • Jade Mazzio-Administrative Services Division

Each division is supported by a team of lieutenants, sergeants, and specialized personnel who manage day-to-day operations and strategic initiatives.

Our patrol division consists of approximately 80 police officers who work a 4-day, 40-hour workweek or a 3-day, 37 1/2-hour workweek with a buyback shift once a month. Based on seniority, there are three shift options: day shift, swing shift, or night shift. In addition to patrol officers, there are traffic motor officers, traffic investigators, and area traffic officers in the field. The investigations division consists of approximately 28 detectives covering fraud investigations, property investigations, and crimes against persons.
